Gaetano Filangieri
prince of Satriano
Napoli 1824-1892
Nephew of the renowned
18th Century jurist and politician, was founder and
chairman of the A.I.M and the Museo civico Filangieri,
which hosts the
collections that he donated in 1883 to the city of Naples.
The main idea that links the two museums is the organization of a modern
expositive
system with didactic finalities especially related to the applied arts
and industry.
This project were intended to rescue the ex Bourbon capital from the
the economic marginalisation which followed Italy's unification and relaunch
it under a
new economic and political profile.
The prince was mainly a collector, but he made his collections accessible
to the public and
contributed to the cultural evolution and growth of artists and craftsmen.
He helped to relaunch the great neapolitan tradition of applied arts.
